I don't usually (ever) take to my blog to write about things to do with celebrities (the Royal Wedding aside) because a lot of the time they're getting enough exposure and this blog isn't really about celebs now, is it?

However I make an exception when someone like Amy Winehouse dies so suddenly. No official statement has been released around why she died so let's not speculate or assume right now. All I know is that around 3.54pm today Emergency Services arrived at her home in Camden where Amy Winehouse was pronounced dead at the scene. 

She was clearly troubled and addiction in all it's forms is a horrible life for anyone, but especially a young, talented and creative woman. I didn't like her music at first, but then I heard "Back to Black" and those lyrics really rang true for me at a point in my life in 2007.

So let's remember something in all this hot mess: a young woman, 2 years older than myself, has died today and that's a real loss to the World in my opinion. So sad for her family.

Producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, Amy's close pal, have been locked in studios across the world for the past few weeks pulling the album together.
They shared the heartbreaking task of listening back to thousands of hours of vocals by the singer, whose troubled life was cut short in July at the age of just 27.

Salaam said: "When I listened back you would hear some of the conversations in between — that was emotional. It has been hard, but it has also been an amazing thing. Amy was a gifted girl.

An inquest last week heard she was five times the drink-drive limit when a bodyguard found her slumped dead on her bed. No drugs were found in her system when she died and she had been clean of them since 2009.
The posthumous album will be released on December 5 and £1 from every sale will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which is helping children's charities.

The most emotional track for the singer's family and fans is her cover of A Song For You, a Leon Russell tune made famous by Amy's favourite artist Donny Hathaway. The song, on which Amy plays guitar, was recorded in a single take at her London home in 2009 as she battled to overcome her addiction to Class A drugs.
Her voice can be heard quaking as she tearfully delivers the lyrics.

Another cover, of Carole King's Shirelles classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, was produced in 2004 — months before Amy embarked on her drink and drug hell.

And a further track, Between The Cheats, was recorded as the star emerged from her turbulent marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil.
Others include Wake Up Alone, from 2006, and classic The Girl From Ipanema — recorded in 2002.

The last song she ever recorded, Body & Soul with Tony Bennett, also appears. The session, at Abbey Road Studios in London in March this year, marked one of the happiest days of her short life.

Tony, 85, said: "It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse. The recording is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance."
Proud Mitch poignantly recalled Amy's amazing lack of ego.

He said: "I remember taking her shopping at a particularly difficult time in her life a few years back.

"We looked through all these racks of clothes, she picked something out and I bought it for her.

"As we were waiting, one of her songs came on, I think it was Stronger Than Me. She just looked at me and said, 'Is that one of my songs, Dad?'

"She genuinely didn't listen to her own music after it was recorded. She wouldn't wallow in her success. That's what was so lovely — she was just Amy. No ego about her."

Amy Winehouse's cause of death was a result of the same factors that kill anyone who overindulges: she, literally, drank herself to death.

It was revealed Wednesday (October 26) that Winehouse had more than five times the legal driving limit of alcohol in her body at the time of her July 23 death, which coroner Suzanne Greenway said unintentionally led to "such potentially fatal levels" that it caused the "Rehab" singer's demise.

Dr. Sam Zakhari, director of the Division of Metabolism and Health Effects at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said what apparently befell Winehouse is not unlike what happens on college campuses every weekend.

"This is not the first time we're hearing about someone dying from an overdose of alcohol," said Zakhari, who did not treat Winehouse and has no firsthand knowledge of her case, but who was speaking to MTV News as an expert on the public facts of the case. "You hear it quite frequently here in the U.S. about college students who drink themselves to death."

Zakhari said when an individual consumes too much alcohol too quickly, their blood alcohol level increases dramatically and it can rise rapidly to several times the legal limit for intoxication. "That inhibits what's called the respiratory center, which is the area in the brain that controls [breathing]. When that is inhibited, people cannot breathe, period. That's what causes their death."

Winehouse, 27, who famously struggled with drug and alcohol addiction during her short life and rapid rise to fame, was found in bed in her London apartment in July, and police said they discovered three bottles of vodka at the scene. The inquest found no sign of illegal drugs in her system, and a postmortem examination of her body found her vital organs in good health. The amount of alcohol in her system was enough to stop her breathing and possibly send her into a coma, according to officials.

After initial autopsy results were inconclusive, the Grammy-winning singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, said his daughter had been drug-free for some time, suggesting that it was alcohol withdrawal that had killed her. But one of the singer's doctors said Winehouse had begun drinking again a few days before her death after a long period of abstinence.

Asked if Winehouse's history of substance abuse had any impact on the way she died, Zakhari said that her background would not necessarily play a part in such a death. "Experience with alcohol doesn't preclude a person from having respiratory arrest," he said. "There's no difference. Tolerance works within certain limits, but that would mainly [have an impact] on behavior." In other words, someone who has never been drunk will exhibit more visible signs of inebriation after consuming large amounts, versus a person with a history of drinking. But that tolerance is quickly negated as the level of alcohol consumed rises.

"A high concentration [of alcohol] will make that part of the brain cease to function regardless of whether that person is a chronic drinker or not," he said.

The Rehab singer’s death on July 23 was ruled “death by misadventure” by Suzanne Greenway, who recorded her verdict in a British court Wednesday.

According to Greenway, “(Winehouse) consumed sufficient alcohol . . . and the unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels was her sudden and unexpected death.” An autopsy on the 27-year-old revealed her blood-alcohol level (at 416 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood) was 4.5 times over the legal drunk-driving limit.

The coroner said she was told by police detective inspector Les Newman, who was called after a security guard found Winehouse, that three empty vodka bottles were scattered around her bedroom.

Winehouse’s GP, Dr. Christina Romete, confirmed that the singer had “resumed drinking” after a long stretch of sobriety just one day before her death. “(She was) tipsy” but “calm,” she told the court. “She was able to hold and follow conversations. She was looking forward to the future and we were talking about her birthday.”

Romete also claimed she had prescribed Winehouse drugs, including the sedative Librium, to help her cope with the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. However, the London Evening Standard reports, “A post-mortem examination found the singer’s vital organs in good health and with no traces of illegal drugs.”

“It is some relief to finally find out what happened to Amy,” the singer’s parents, Mitch and Janet, said in a joint statement. “It means a lot to us, and from the overwhelming messages of support we have had since Amy died, we know she meant a great deal to people all over the world.”
